Teeth Whitening Q & A
When do I need teeth whitening?
You might need teeth whitening if your teeth are yellow, dark, or stained. Some of the most common reasons for this type of discoloration include:
- Drinking dark beverages, such as coffee
- Drinking red wine, fruit juice, or other brightly colored beverages
- Eating foods with spices such as turmeric
- Soy sauce or tomato sauce
- Smoking cigarettes
- Chewing tobacco
- Excessive fluoride during childhood
- Taking certain medications, including tetracycline
Aging can also lead to tooth darkening. Over the years, your tooth enamel slowly thins. That shows more of the next layer of the tooth (the dentin), which is naturally yellow.
Tooth whitening at We Care 4U Dental Center can help with any type of tooth darkening, discoloration, or staining. If you don't like the color of your teeth, discuss teeth whitening with Dr. Pagan to find out if it is right for you.
How does teeth whitening work?
We Care 4U Dental Center offers a highly effective use-at-home teeth whitening system. Usually, you'll have two appointments for this type of teeth whitening.
At your first appointment, Dr. Pagan creates molds of your teeth. That is a quick and painless process. Dr. Pagan sends the molds to a dental lab, where they fabricate customized trays.
At your second appointment, you return for your trays and whitening solution. Dr. Pagan checks the fit of the trays and explains how to use them.
There are two different protocols for teeth whitening, including twice-daily tray wear for half-an-hour at a time or overnight wear. Both options can noticeably whiten your teeth within weeks.
How long do teeth whitening results last?
Teeth whitening isn't permanent. But, if you avoid the substances that cause tooth discoloration and schedule regular teeth cleanings, you can maintain results with touch-ups every few years.
Does teeth whitening affect fillings?
No, teeth whitening doesn't affect tooth-colored fillings nor does it affect veneers, crowns, or dental implants. If you're planning dental procedures, it's best to whiten your teeth first. That way, Dr. Pagan can match your restoration to your preferred tooth shade for a beautiful result.
